Visura Educational Program
Latest Workshop: Sabana Seca, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, June 2009
The Niños de Nueva Esperanza project held a Photography and Ecology Workshop for a group of 20 teenagers from the community of Sabana Seca, Toa Baja, with the goal of developing ecological awareness and reinforcing individual self-expression through photography. Instructed by Adriana Teresa with the assistance of Graham Letorney, the youths explored three approaches to the photographic image: portraiture, photo-documentation, and the concept of metaphor. Culminating in an exhibition, the talented and motivated teenagers shared their environmental concerns and goals with their community. The workshop was developed for the Niños de Nueva Esperanza project by FotoVisura
and coordinated by the Franciscan Friars, under the auspices of the RISA Foundation.
Niños de Nueva Esperanza is a community alternative education organization with over 200 boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 16 in Sabana Seca, a town in northern Puerto Rico that has been marginalized by poverty and violence.
